What Styles of Music Can You Learn?

Although there are countless wonderful styles of music, our school focuses on what is often called “Western classical music.” Also known as “art music” or “serious music,” this refers to European music from the Baroque, classical, romantic, and contemporary periods. These musical styles include complex musical forms and harmonies that one can spend a lifetime mastering. Our skilled teachers break down every detail in a way that even children can understand.

Where Can I Buy The Necessary Lesson Materials?

Performance Opportunities

Silicon Valley Second School hosts 4 recitals and 1 festival per year. With so many opportunities to perform, students build confidence.
They think of performing as “no big deal.”

Many parents report that this confidence spreads to other areas of their children’s lives. Because of their performance experience, they don’t become nervous for tests, sports games, and other high-pressure activities.

Music Exams

We prepare our students for several non-competitive music exams and auditions throughout the year:

  • Certificate of Merit with Music Teacher Association of California (MTAC)

  • Auditions with Music Teachers National Association (MTNA)

  • National Auditions with American College of Musicians

  • Royal Conservatory Music Development program (RCM)

  • The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) Exams

  • Advanced Placement (AP) Music Theory

Additionally, our school is a center for national piano auditions with the American College of Musicians and National Guild of Piano Teachers.

What are the benefits of participating in music exams?

  1. Set goals and track your progress. Exams offer a clear roadmap for your musical journey. By working towards an exam, you can see your progress and celebrate when you achieve your goals.

  2. Improve your technique and musicianship. Exams test several areas of musicianship: technique, ear training, sight reading, music theory, and musical understanding. By preparing for an exam, you focus on specific areas of musical development and work on improving your skills.

  3. Enhance your resume and stand out to universities and employers. If you're planning on pursuing a career in music, having exam qualifications on your resume can set you apart from other applicants. Even if you don’t plan to pursue a career in music, including your exam achievements on your college application can show dedication and commitment to a craft over several years.

  4. Increase confidence and motivation. Preparing for exams can be a great motivator — especially when you see your progress over time. Plus, when you have something to prepare for, you are more likely to practice consistently!
